## The History and Geology of Montana’s Hot Springs
Montana’s hot springs begin deep underground. Snowmelt and rainwater seep into the earth, where they’re heated by geothermal energy before rising back to the surface through cracks in the rock.
In southwest Montana, this process is closely tied to the same forces that power Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone sits above a massive geothermal hotspot. While its geysers and thermal features are the most visible, that underground heat extends well beyond the park. As water moves through fault lines and porous rock, it warms and resurfaces across the region, creating hot springs throughout Montana.
These waters have drawn people here for centuries. Indigenous communities used hot springs for rest, healing, and gathering long before modern development. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, bathhouses and resorts were built around many of these sites, turning them into destinations for travelers.
Today, Montana’s hot springs reflect both sides of that story. Some remain simple and close to nature. Others offer full amenities and historic lodging. All of them are shaped by the same geothermal forces still active beneath the landscape.
